Fly/Ski
Trip to the Kossen in the Austrian Alps 2009
Introduction
Our Fly/Ski trips have proven popular as a winter getaway with the best of both worlds; we fly or we ski and we can almost always do one of them!
This year we are going to Austria. We will be staying in the beautiful Tyrolean resort of Kossen, in a chalet literally 150mtrs from the Ski lifts and the landing field. This area is renowned for good skiing and flying, with over 60 take off sites in the area, so weather permitting we will be doing a lot of both. Kössen is situated in a valley basin encircled by the majestic Kaiser Mountains and the soft ridges of the Kitzbühel Alps.
The town of Kossen is very traditional, with beautiful old buildings in the village centre creating a unique atmosphere. With plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from - for the essential apres ski/fly.
You will have one of the Sunsoar team to guide and advise you and we will be accompanied by an experienced flying guide from Skywalk Paragliders who has expert knowledge of the local area and all of the flying sites available.
During the week we will also make a visit to the Skywalk HQ only 15mins away, for a guided tour and insight into cutting edge paraglider design.
The
Holiday
The prime
motive is to fly or slide. We will try to do whichever is most
appropriate for the day, and sometimes we may do both! We will
decide each morning what the majority of the group wants to do
and the bus will go with that decision. However, because we are situated close to the lift infrastructure, individuals can do their
own thing if preferred. No formal tuition is offered but your
guides are experienced pilots and skiers/boarders so coaching in each discipline
is available. We will guide you to the best skiing/flying for
the day - the rest is up to you!
Alternative activities, should you get weary and tired of skiing and flying can also be included, with a trip to Saltzburg castle, the exciting indoor water park, sauna and spas to relieve those aching muscles. We might even visit the old salt mine in Berchtesgaden, which is an amazing day out underground and great fun for everyone. http://www.salzzeitreise.de/en/global/home.html
The
Flying
Kossen has an easily accessible west facing launch reachable using the ski lifts. The valley is large and open and offers excellent flying possibilities. There are many other launch areas within a 50km radius, offering something for all weather conditions and abilities. In early March conditions should be fairly steady with a nice mix of top to bottom and thermal flying.
Check out the following Youtube video for a taste of the area (note its summer in the film!)
The
Skiing
The impressive massifs of both Wilder and Zahmer Kaiser form the spectacular setting for the region of Kaiserwinkl with its winter sports resorts. The region which is directly on the border to Germany has recently developed into a true winter sport paradise. In total, 30 kilometres of piste provide an attractive range for skiers as well as snowboarders. The longest of these pistes measures 7 km and has a difference in altitude of over 1,100 m! Cross-country skiers will find all types of cross-country trails on one of Europe's largest cross-country trail networks. Along with this there is excellent après ski and a wide range of leisure activities. Kössen - the holiday experience!
Centrally located Kössen (589 m) is Kaiserwinkel’s main resort. The cosy Tyrolean village is located north of the Unterberghorn and offers everything a winter sports fan’s heart desires. Kössen is especially suited for families and relaxed skiers, as well as for cross-country skiers.
If you have never skied or boarded before, then you will need
to take lessons. These can be booked at the local ski hill and
usually comprise of 2 hours per day. This may make it difficult
to liase with the rest of the group as the rest of the group may
want to go flying when your lesson is booked. We will try our
best to accomodate this.
Accomodation
We will be staying in a traditional Tyrolean country inn situated close to both the ski lifts and the town centre. Accomodation is on a B&B basis and we will try a range of venues for our evening meals.
