About Us

Where you choose to learn how to fly can make a tremendous difference. As one of the UK's longest established and most successful schools, Sunsoar Paragliding have a lot to offer.  We are conveniently situated between the heart of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District and have excellent and uncrowded sites for every wind direction.

We are only 15 minutes from junction 38 of the M6 and 15 minutes from the A66 trans-Pennine road. By rail, the famous Settle to Carlisle railway passes close by. This puts us comfortably in range of the North East, North West, Scotland and all of Cumbria and Yorkshire.

The Dales/Lakes area is among the best in the UK for paragliding, with many height and distance records set from the hills around our base.  National competitions are also held here.  We have several fully qualified instructors, at least three of whom hold the 'BHPA Senior Instructor' rating (the highest level available) and all are friendly, experienced professionals.

Our Centre is conveniently located on the main road through Kirkby Stephen.

We meet at the Centre each morning and offer theory lectures in our dedicated classroom equipped with video and teaching aids.  A low student to instructor ratio enables us to acurately assess each individual ensuring progress through the course at your own pace.  Classes are informal and everyone is encouraged to ask questions, join in discussions and help each other.

Our experience is that paragliding attracts people from a huge cross-section of society, so our groups are often an interesting mixture of people from all backgrounds.  There is nothing quite like the shared experience of your first flight for making friends!

Our aim is quite simple, to offer the best tuition available anywhere.  To do this we have looked carefully at every aspect of our operation and we are always asking "is there any way to make this better?"

Our equipment is state of the art, with purpose-built training wings and modern harnesses (using quick -lock buckles, twist locking carabiners and certified 'bump'air' back protection devices.(the same standards of gear used by experienced pilots.)  Too often training schools use old or basic equipment for their pupils, but we believe that having the best gear makes your progress quicker and safer. All our training wings are independently checked and serviced each season. Every pupil is fitted with a modern helmet. These are replaced regularly. All our school helmets are CEN certified airsports helmets.  The school is fully equipped with over 25 radio transceivers, first aid kits, batons, windsocks and other training aids along with schoolroom facilities including Powerpoint training presentations to prepare students for the the theory as well as the practice of paragliding
We are, beyond doubt among the best equipped paragliding schools in the world.

We have excellent grassy slopes for every wind direction.  In the Dales we are lucky that there are no fences, no power lines, no trees and no crowds… We have far more sites to choose from than any other school in the UK and many are exclusive to us.
Each site has been individually risk assessed. And all this information is available to all pupils.

The Pilot rating system includes a number of theory sessions. These are given in our classroom with a standardised powerpoint presentation so every pupil gets the best possible information.

Critical information is contained in our briefing packs that are issued to every pupil (on EP courses and above) for use as revision notes and further information.

We are all jolly good chaps! -see 'The Team' on this website. (Last time we advertised for an instructor we had 11 applications (several from staff at other schools). However, we are all always learning! Our senior staff attend the BHPA senior instructor course every three years and we run internal training days to continually improve standards. We also teach new instructors and assess for the BHPA and other schools.
We operate with low instructor / pupil ratios.

The only thing we cannot control is the British weather! But in response to this challenge we have followed the sun!
Sunsoar were the first school to run BHPA beginners training courses abroad. We are now the UK's premier provider of Overseas training with Beginner courses at the Dune De Pyla in France where we have been training since the late nineties.and now in Morocco and the Alps where we teach Club Pilot and beyond. Over the years we have been teaching and running trips to South and North Cyprus, Isreal, Spain, Greece, France, Switzerland and Montenegro as well as Southern and Northern Morocco and now Nepal. These have been a huge success with all pupils completing the majority of the CP syllabus during their holiday.

For those with their CP rating we offer a selection of holidays in various locations.Primarily the Alps where we now offer thermalling and XC courses and Nepal for the trip of a lifetime! See our web-site for current details.

You may be asked to complete a questionnaire at the end of your course to help us try and improve our service.
