Suitability – All Levels (inc Level 4 for Tandem Training)

To find out is you're suitable visit our pilot levels

Morocco over winter usually presents reliable flying conditions, ideal for doing plenty of take-offs and landings, together with soaring flights and top landings. We use several sites along the coast including the main site at ‘The Eagle’s Nest’ (search ‘Nid d’Aigle’ online) which is 20 mins from our base in Mirleft. A short distance up and down the coast are the dramatic flying sites at Aglou and Legzira. This area, situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Sahara Desert, is totally unspoiled by tourism (unlike the North of Morocco / Marrakech).

Our Moroccan trip has great potential for all levels of pilot, particularly those looking for some African adventure and wishing to develop their skills and airtime. It is a place where the weather seems consistently good throughout the winter when the opportunity to fly at home will be very limited. The terrain, a long ridge with flat lands reaching out to the coast a mile away is not unlike the places you may fly at home but with the benefits of smooth sea breezes and gentle thermals. For all these reasons Morocco is our tried and tested location for Tandem training as well as being fantastic for solo pilots.

Designed to comprehensively cover all the training required for the BHPA Tandem Pilot licence with our experienced dual this intensive course will cover all the theory and practical work you will require to become a safe and skilled tandem pilot. This includes developing your interaction with the passenger prior to and during the flight.

You will have an opportunity to carry out plenty of launches, short flights and landings, exploring a variety of techniques. The course will involve flying as the pilot and as the passenger.

When you have completed sufficient flights and reached the required standard a mock examination will be conducted by your instructors. This involves an interview, the practical flying exercises and a multi-choice written exam. The training will prepare you for an independent examination by the BHPA, which should be possible in Morocco or can be arranged at a later date in the UK.

The standard of piloting required is 'Expert', in particular, exemplary ground handling is vital.

The BHPA minimum entry requirements are:

Full annual BHPA membership with Pilot rating and in current flying practice
200 logged hours, including 100 hours post - Pilot qualified (with evidence)
You will need good communication skills and be able to brief your passengers clearly.

Your ground handling, wing control, launching and landing skills must all be excellent.

Note: Be warned that the standard required by the BHPA is very high and there is no guarantee of a pass!

There is a cost supplement to cover tandem equipment*, tuition and the high instructor to student ratios (typically 2 students are paired with 1 instructor).

* Note: If you bring your own tandem equipment to use (which we highly recommend) you will receive a £200 discount off the cost of the trip. If you are serious about becoming a tandem pilot, purchasing and practicing with your own gear is a definite advantage. We are dealers for most makes of paragliding equipment, so please feel free to talk to us before you buy. You are encouraged to bring your own personal flying equipment so you can enjoy some solo flying.

Note: the BHPA dual examination fees are not included but Sunsoar will make sure a BHPA examiner comes out to test at the end of the course.

We will be staying in the small coastal town of Mirleft, either at the Abertih hotel, or in an apartment nearby. Mirleft is about 2 hours south of Agadir (the main airport we fly in to). The hotel is built in the local Moorish style and this charming family run guest house has proven itself to be a real favourite with all who have stayed there. Breakfast and dinner are taken in the hotel, the food is typically Moroccan and delicious. A good value lunch is available at the launch area. The Abertih vibe is wonderful, with excellent food, a good selection of drinks and a Hammam in the hotel for post flight massages.

The package includes expert guiding for solo pilots, all take-off fees, accommodation on half-board basis, airport transfers and all retrieves at the flying sites.

We fly to Agadir in Morocco. The airport is served by many airlines from the UK. We will supply transport during your trip and airport transfers (provided you arrive and depart at the recommended times). Transport will include lifts to and from the flying sites and any recreational trips.

As always, please do not book your flights until the trip has been confirmed by us!

Please note that for personal accident insurance Morocco is often considered included in Europe-wide insurance policies (check your own policy).
