Thermalling and Cross Country flying in NEPAL

Paragliding Course Description

Nepal, Trip of a Lifetime!

1 x 2week trip

Sat 01-Sat 15 Feb 2020

This is a recently introduced trip for Sunsoar and we are very excited about it. It is aimed at qualified pilots (CP +) with at least ten hours flying under their belt.  This is a great opportunity for Club Pilots to progress towards BHPA Pilot accreditation level.  For those with more experience there is no limit to fulfilling your potential.

Although a recent addition to the Sunsoar repertoire, this trip has been tried and tested many times by our intrepid instructor and guide Pete Gallagher with many Nepal trips under his belt.

The weather at this time of year is usually warm and sunny, with nice thermal conditions.

Transport and International flights to Kathmandu are easily available from London and Manchester, usually via Doha.  Once we arrive in Pokhara we will be staying in a small, simple hotel on Lakeside within easy walking distance of the local bazaar and shops. There is widespread free Wifi access in most cafes and restaurants on Lakeside and the cost of eating out is low.

Nepal is an amazing place to visit even without the flying and we will spend some time in the colorful, unique capital Kathmandu taking in the sights and sounds before taking an internal flight to the lakeside town of Pokhara for the flying fun.

Nepal-A Place to see, a Place to fly! What a time to go, when the weather gets cold and wet in the UK end your year with a great Sunsoar flying experience! and back for Xmas.

The Location

The weather in Pokhara in February is generally pleasantly warm in the day, but its often quite cold at night.  This usually leads to good thermal conditions with light winds. Our primary flying site is the famous Sarangkot ridge above Fewa lake with its reliable house thermal, though we will also use other sites during the trip.  The recovery from the bottom landing area next to the lake is mostly on tarmac roads, so retrieves are straightforward. Nepal has everything you could wish for on a trip of a lifetime , great flying, a fascinating culture, genuinely friendly people, bustling nightlife and a chance to shop and sight see as well.  Most things are relatively cheap in Nepal, including eating out (apart from alcohol which is heavily taxed).

The Holiday

Based in a modest, but clean and cheerful hotel on Pokhara lakeside our aim will be to do as much flying as possible each day with a combination of thermalling and soaring flights. The days will commence as you wander out of the hotel to find your favourite cafe on lakeside for a leisurely breakfast. As the day warms up and we see the birds of prey begin to soar looking for their breakfast we will take the 4 x4 jeep up to take off for the first flight of the day, usually a gentle extended top to bottom. As the thermals build the second flight is usually a thermalling flight along the ridge with the possibility of going cross country, depending on your level of experience. We will have an experienced instructor on launch and in the air or on the landing field, in direct communication with all pilots. In the evenings there are many good restaurants to explore along lakeside (most have free Wifi for customers) and straight outside the hotel is the hustle and bustle of the local shops and street vendors with the exotic sights, sounds and smells of Nepal!

What Level of Pilot is it for?

Although ab-initio training can be carried out in Pokhara this trip is really ideal for those who as a minimum are already qualified Club Pilots with around a further 10 hours airtime in order to make the most of the thermalling and cross country opportunities.  If you are in any doubt if this is the trip for you please ask us.  For those of you with more experience the sky's the limit!

We will be staying in a small, modest and friendly hotel on lakeside with shops and cafes right on your doorstep. Single rooms are usually available at a very small surcharge. The hotel will have a generator (there are frequent power cuts!), Wifi and its own small restaurant.

What else is there to do?

Nepal is a truly beautiful country, the flying is reliable and the views are often breathtaking. However, as always there is a chance of unflyable days so we need to be ready for this. Other activities include:

Mountain biking (bikes can be hired locally for the entire trip)
White water rafting
Site seeing (the local peace stupa is a popular day trip)
Relaxing and people watching – don’t forget it’s a holiday!

Getting There

You can fly to the capital Kathmandu from most major UK airports, but we would advise you to fly from London Heathrow via Doha with Qatar Airways. We will meet you at Kathmandhu airport and the first night we will stay in the city before travelling to Pokhara by internal flight the next day. When we return to Kathmandu at the end of the trip it will be on a short internal flight. We will then spend a night in Kathmandu before flying home.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. Do I have to travel on the flight you use - for example if I live a long way from the airport your flight leaves from?
A. No, you can organise your own flight if you can find something suitable, but be aware that you may also need to organise your own transport from the airport to the hotel.

Q. Do I need my own equipment?
A. Yes, you will need all your own equipment.

Q. I would like to stay for an irregular number of days, can you accomodate this?
A. Yes! We can usually be flexible on this but be prepared to pay for your own airport transfers if the times and dates do not coincide with our pick-ups.

Q. Do you do group discounts?
A. We have no specific discount structure, but if you have a group of 4 or more and are willing for one person to be the contact for the group, then we will be able to offer you a discount.

Q. How reliable is the weather?
A. We can never guarantee the weather anywhere in the world. We pick our dates to offer the best chance of reliable conditions and as a way to extend the normal UK season.  Nepal is one of the most reliably flyable places so the prospects are excellent, although no guarantees can be given!

Q. What if it is not flyable?
A. We will try our best to find some interesting activities or excursions, but there is a lot to do and experience in Nepal!

Q. Can I bring my non-flying partner and/or family?
A. Yes! We can organise a hotel room to suit you and there are often other non-flyers in the group.  We may be able to offer a tandem flight for non-flyers.

Q. Do I need any innoculations?
A. Yes, you should consult yout GP well in advance.
